Win streak hits 20 as Knights sweep Eastern CT

Willimantic, CT (April 18, 2022) – The newly minted #3 nationally ranked Northern Essex Community College baseball team won their 20th straight game on Monday night as they swept a pair of games from Eastern Connecticut State (JV). The Knights improved their record to 28-2.

Game 1:

  • The Knights exploded for 12 runs in the 4th inning as part of a 15-hit attack to blow the game open. They never trailed as they jumped out to 3-0 in the top of the first.
  • Jared Coppola (Lynn) drove in the first run of the game as he ripped a double to right field that scored Richie Williams (Georgetown) who led the game off with a double. Richard Matos (Boston) contributed a double of his own that drove in Coppola and Chris Bear (Boston) who reached via fielder's choice.
  • Matos drove in another run in the third with a single to left that scored Bear who led the inning off with a single.
  • The 12 run fourth, saw Bear drive in two, Matos recorded his fourth RBI of the game. Coppola, Nick White (Townsend), Williams all recorded multiple RBIs in the inning.
  • Alex Sweeney (Raymond, NH) got the start on the mound and went three innings striking out four, allowing five hits allowing six runs (five earned) and walking three. Tom Cattaneo (Guilford, CT) tossed the final two inning before the game was called. He allowed one run on one hit striking out two.

Game 2:

  • Dallas Vaughan (Haverhill) started the second game tossing three innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out five and walking one. Jack Swarbrick (Haverhill) finished the game allowing one hit and striking out three.
  • After falling behind 1-0 in the first, the Knights plated a pair of runs in both the second and third innings to secure the win.
  • After Coppola led off the inning with a walk he scored on a passed ball two batters later. Nick Panzini (Methuen) drove in what would turn out to be the winning run when he drove a basehit up the middle with two outs.
  • Joey Settle (Melbourne) drove in a pair of runs with a two out line drive to right field that scored White and Coppola who reached on back to back one out singles.

The Knights will return home and to Region 21 action on Thursday afternoon when they play host Community College of Rhode Island at Trinity Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00pm
