NECC runs streak to 28 with sweep of UCAP

Groton, CT (May 1, 2022) – The Northern Essex Community College baseball team racked up their 27th and 28th straight victories of the season on Sunday afternoon as they defeated the UConn-Avery Point Pointers in a pair of regional non division games and in the process improved their record to 36-2 overall on the season.

Game 1:

  • Jayden Voelker (Coventry, RI) took the ball in game one and went 5 1/3 innings striking out seven, while walking seven and allowing three runs on two hits. Tyler McDonald (Haverhill) threw the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking one, while allowing two hits.
  • UCAP took a 1-0 lead in the third before the Knights broke with a pair of runs in the fifth for a lead they would not relinquish. Clay Campbell (Goffstown, NH) and Joey Settle (Melbourne, FL) both reached to get the inning started. Both would come around the score on a single to left field by Kam Levesque (Hooksett, NH) which was misplayed by the left fielder.
  • Nick White (Townsend) led off the 6th with a double and would immediately come around to score on an opposite field line drive to right by Jared Coppola (Lynn). With one out and the bases loaded Lucas Berube (Dighton) sent a ground ball past the first basemen to score Coppola. Levesque would drive in a pair of runs one batter latter on a single to right field.
  • NECC added a pair of insurance runs in the 7th as White led off the second consecutive inning with a double and would score on a sacrifice from Campbell. Settle recorded as RBI double to cap the Knights offense.
  • For the game, the Knights ripped off 10 hits, including four extra base hits from White (2), Settle and Richard Matos (Boston).

Game 2:

  • Todd Tringale (Saugus) picked up his team leading seventh win of the season as he tossed six innings of four hit ball, striking out 9 and walking three. Jack Swarbrick (Haverhill) closed the door in the 7th striking out two.
  • The Knights got on the board in the 3rd with a single run as they loaded the bases with no outs and Berube crossed the plate on a wile pitch after leading the inning off with a walk.
  • A three spot in the 5th gave NECC insurance as UCAP threated with runners in scoring position on three different occasions. Levesque got the inning started with a single and would steal second and come around the score on a single from Chris Bear (Boston), Bear would score on a double from Kyle Hsu (Brookline, NH). Hsu would score the final run of the inning on a passed ball.
  • NECC capped the scoring with two outs in the 7th inning as Campbell pulled a ball down the right field line that scored Bear and Hsu, who reached via a one out walk and base hit respectively.
  • Hsu and Matos both recorded an extra base hit as part of NECC's eight hit output in the second game.

The Knights will host Southern Maine Community College on Tuesday afternoon to cap off the regular season, before remaining home to kick off the post-season on Thursday evening when they will entertain the Community College of Rhode Island in the first round of the Region 21 Tournament.
