2nd inning dooms Knights, fall on opening day of World Series

Greeneville, TN (May 28, 2022) – The Northern Essex Community College baseball team saw their 33-game win streak snapped on the opening day of the NJCAA Division III World Series as they dropped their first game of the double elimination tournament 10-0 to Herkimer College. The Knights will face elimination on Sunday morning as they play the loser of the RCSJ-Gloucester vs. Oakton game scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

#3 NECC 0 #6 Herkimer College 10
  • After a scoreless first inning, Herkimer plated six runs in the second off of three errors from the Knights. The first two batters of the inning reached via base hit and walk and the first run came into score on a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt attempt by the Generals. A second run would score on a wild pitch and a third run via an error. With the bases loaded a base hit up the middle and misplayed ball in the outfield allowed three more runs to come in for the six runs in the second inning.
  • NECC threatened with a pair of runners on base in both the first and fourth innings but couldn't muster a runner beyond second base. The Knights managed only two hits in the game from Nick White (Townsend) and Richie Williams (Georgetown).
  • NECC struggled at the plate striking out 15 times against Herkimer left-handed pitcher and University of Louisville bound Greg Farone.
  • Jayden Voelker (Coventry, RI) started on the mound for the Knights and went 2 1/3 innings allowing eight runs (five earned) on four hits, five walks and two strikeouts. Jagger Iovinelli (Huntington Beach, CA) came on and threw 4 1/3 innings of relief allowing two runs on six hits striking out one. Tristian Ciampa (Wilmington) came on to finish the game for NECC, striking out one and allowing one hit.
The Knights will likely send Todd Tringale (Saugus) to the mound on Sunday looking to extend the season.
