Haverhill (February 16, 2022) - Mehmet Asik (Ankara, TR) of the Northern Essex Community College men's basketball team has been named the NJCAA men's basketball player of the week, for the week ending February 13th.

Asik helped lead the Knights to a pair of victories over Springfield Technical Community College and Quinsigamond Community College as he averaged 21.5 points and 14.5 rebounds and 4.5 assists in the pair of games.

With Monday's win over Bristol Community College the Knights have won 12 games in a row and Asik kept the streak alive against Quinsigamond last Thursday. With 4.3 seconds left in the second half and the Knights trailing 67-64, Asik grabbed a rebound off a missed foul shot and rushed down the court to throw up a three-pointer with a defender in his face that went in at the buzzer and forced overtime. NECC went on to win their 11th straight in overtime 75-71 over Quinsigamond.

Asik and the Knights return to the court tomorrow evening when they travel to Massasoit for a 6:30pm tip-off. The Knights will cap off the regular season on Saturday afternoon when they entertain Quincy College for the noon time tip.
