Knights drop non-conference opener to SMCC, 3-1

Haverhill, MA (September 8, 2021) – Playing their first game since October of 2019, the NECC men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 non-conference affair to Southern Maine Community College on Wednesday evening.

After a sluggish opening few minutes, the Knights jumped out to 1-0 lead in the 18th minute of play as Danny Mayombwe (Lowell) from the lower left corner of the 18 yard box and lifted the ball to far upper corner for the first goal of the match. Jack Latauskas (Byfield/Whittier Tech) was credited with the assist on the goal.

SMCC tied things up at one just before the half they tucked in a goal with 55 seconds remaining in the half. The Seawolves would add two more goals in the 50th and 86th minutes of the game.

In goal Jon Chasse (Haverhill) made several keys saves throughout the match to keep the Knights in striking distance.

NECC had a pair of strong scoring opportunities in the second half as they pushed a ball just left of an open net in the 60th minute and a header over the cross bar in the 73rd minute.

The Knights will return to the pitch on Friday afternoon for another non-conference match as they will host Central Maine Community College at 4:00pm.
