NECC Weekend Roundup: Soccer Wins Sixth Straight, Volleyball Splits Region 21 Tri-Match

Haverhill, MA (September 29, 2024) - Mixed results for the Knights athletic program over the weekend as men's soccer picked up their sixth straight win with a 2-0 result over Quinsigamond, while volleyball split a pair of matches, beating Bristol before falling to Holyoke both by 3-1 scores. 

SOCCER

A pair of first half goals were the difference as the Knights improved their record to 6-2 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 3-0. The six straight wins are the third longest active winning streak in country.

A trio from Nashua, NH took care of all the scoring for the Knights as Jonathan Lopes got NECC out to 1-0 lead in the 9th minute as he got his head onto a lose ball deflected in the box following a free kick from 35 yards out. With two minutes remaining before halftime Christian Colem sent the ball into the lower right corner of the net just past the outstretched goalkeeper on a feed from Jadiel Bomfim.

Will Paganini (Derry, NH) made three second half saves to pick up his sixth win of the season.

NECC outshot the Wyverns 24-12 for the match and recorded six corner kicks to three for QCC.

The Knights hit the road on Tuesday to take on Bristol at 4:00pm at Britland Park in Fall River.

VOLLEYBALL

With the tri-match split, the Knights move to 4-3 on the season and sit at 4-1 in conference play.

Over the course of two matches, Ashley Martinez (Lawrence) and Nileyshka Rigual (Lawrence) led the offensive attack as they recorded 27 and 16 kills each over the course of the two matches. Cherly BritoRosario (Lawrence) dished out 45 combined assists.

On the defensive side of the net, in the opening match with Bristol, Yenelis Beltre (Lawrence) had a match high 13 digs, while in the nightcap Angela Medina (Lawrence) had a team high 16 digs.

Both matched were extremely tight throughout, against Bristol, the Knights picked up the 3-1 victory with set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-23. Against Holyoke, the Knights won the opening set 25-16 before dropping three straight, 25-14, 26-24 and 25-20.

The Knights will return to the court on Tuesday when they host MassBay in Region 21 action at 6:30pm in the Sport and Fitness Center on the Haverhill campus.
