Knights hang on, advance in World Series with 4-3 win over RCSJ-Gloucester

Greeneville, TN (May 29, 2022) – A day after having their 33 game winning streak was snapped the Northern Essex Community College baseball team bounced back and hung on for 4-3 win in an elimination game over second ranked RCSJ-Gloucester to move on in the tournament. With the win the Knights improve to 42-3 on the season and will play on Monday at 3:30pm against the loser of the Caldwell Tech and Dallas-Eastfield game being played later tonight.

  • The game remained scoreless through four innings before the Knights got on the board in the top of the 5th inning. Levi Burrill (Amesbury) ripped a double down the left field line with one out and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly to right by Lucas Berube (Dighton). Burrill would cross the plate when Joe Settle (Melbourne, FL) making a spot start at second base ripped an RBI single back up the middle for the 1-0 lead.
  • The Knights would add three more runs in the 6th to stake to a 4-0 lead. Kyle Hsu (Brookline, NH) led off the inning wit h a walk and advanced to third on a single from Nick White (Townsend). Hsu would give NECC a 2-0 lead when he scored on a single from Jared Coppola (Lynn). White would score on a ground out to shortstop by Richard Matos (Boston). Coppola would add the final run of the inning when the catcher tried picking him off third base and threw the ball into left field.
  • Gloucester would make things interesting in the 8th as they scored three runs on four hits, with one NECC error but would leave the bases loaded for the first of two consecutive innings. Knights closer Tyler McDonald (Haverhill) would come on for the final two outs of the game as the Roadrunners left the bases loaded to end the game.
  • Todd Tringale (Saugus) started for NECC and went 7 1/3 innings, striking out 10 and allowing three runs on eight hits while walking two. Alex Sweeney (Raymond, NH) pitched one inning of relief allowing four hits prior to handing the ball to McDonald.

Notes:

  • NECC exacted revenge on RCSJ-Gloucester who defeated the Knights six times during the 2021 season including the North Atlantic District Championship Game to advance to the World Series.
  • The Knights and Gloucester last met in World Series in 2016, when NECC eliminated the Roadrunners by an identical 4-3 on their way to the championship round.
