Haverhill, MA (March 25, 2024) - The Northern Essex Community College baseball team, receiving votes in this week's NJCAA national poll played their first game of the season at Haverhill Stadium on Tuesday night and rolled past York County Community College for their fifth straight win by an 11-0 final in non-conference action and improved to 9-7 overall on the season.
Jack Sarno (Byfield) got the start and pitched five innings of two hit baseball, while striking out four batters and issuing just one walk, throwing 58 pitches including 38 for strikes.
Francis Comeau (Plymouth) and Jake Kelleher (Haverhill) closed out the final two innings in the run rule shortened game, not allowing a hit while striking out three.
For the game, NECC outhit York by a 12-2 count led by the three hit, four RBI performance from Manny Castro (Manchester, NH), who plated three runs in the first inning with a bases clearing triple and would later add a line drive in the fifth for his fourth RBI that would give the Knights a 6-0 lead.
Jaren Megan (Fairhaven), Anthony Marino (Lynn) and Kade Masselli (New Gloucester, ME) each recorded two hits apiece.
Thomas Fratto (Reading) and Jake Yngber (Miami, FL) both added extra base hits, as Fratto recorded a third inning triple and Yngber added an RBI double in the fifth inning.
