Men's soccer opens up season with 3-1 victory over SMCC

Portland, ME (September 7, 2022) – The Northern Essex Community College men's soccer team opened up their season this afternoon as they hit the road and picked up a 3-1 victory over Southern Maine Community College.

 

Freshman Jonathan Diaz (Methuen) recorded the first two goals of his collegiate career to stake the Knights to 2-0 lead at halftime. In the 27th minute Jake Igoe (Haverhill) was taken down in the box and Diaz was called upon to take the penalty put NECC up 1-0. Six minutes later Diaz sent his second goal of the match into the lower left corner of the goal from 18 yards out.

 

Four minutes into the second half, Sam De Amorim (Methuen/North Andover) recorded his first collegiate goal as he grabbed from a scramble and calmly placed it into the net from 15 yards out. To give NECC a 3-0 lead. SMCC scored their lone goal with just under eight minutes remaining.

 

Anhuar Ramos Garcia (Nashua, NH/Nashua North) picked up his first collegiate win as he recorded eight saves on nine shots for the Knights.

 

NECC will remain on the road as they return to Maine on Saturday afternoon for non-conference match with Central Maine Community College. Match time is set for 1:00pm on the CMCC campus in Auburn.
