Knights break single season wins record in sweep of CCRI

Warwick, RI (April 23, 2022) – The #3 nationally ranked Northern Essex Community College broke the schools single season wins record as the Knights swept the season series from CCRI and in the process on their 31st game of the season. In the process the Knights matched the program record for consecutive wins with 23 and broke the schools single season shutout record, which now stands at 12. The Knights are 31-2 on the season and remain perfect in Region 21 action at 9-0.

Game 1:

  • Jayden Voelker (Cumberland, RI) returned to his home state and impressed on the mound as he fired six innings of one hit baseball striking out 11 and walking four. Tyler McDonald (Haverhill) came on to close the door in the 7th and stuck out one batter.
  • The Knights got the only runs they would need with a pair in the top of the first inning. Chris Bear (Boston) got things going with a one double to right and came around to score when Nick White (Townsend) singled a 1-2 pitch back up the middle. After swiping second for his 26th stolen base of the season, White scored on a single past the shortstop from Richard Matos (Boston).
  • The Knights added a single run in the 4th, when Kam Levesque (Goffstown, NH) drove a two out single to right field that scored Lucas Berube (Dighton) who reached via a single to left two batters previously.
  • NECC added an insurance run in the 7th when Leveaque reached on a bunt and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error, he came around to score two pitches later when Richie Williams (Georgetown) lined a single to center.

Game 2:

  • Todd Tringale (Saugus) went the distance for NECC in game two as he struck out nine and walked one while allowing three hits in five innings of work as the game was halted after five innings by the run rule.
  • The Knights once again plated a pair of runs in the top of the 1st. Williams and Bear recorded back-to-back singles before White grounded out to the shortstop to bring in the first run of the game. Bear would score one batter later when Jared Coppola (Lynn) reached on an error by the shortstop.
  • NECC blew the game open in the 2nd with a five spot as the first three batters of the inning all reached. Kyle Hsu (Brookline, NH) led off with a walk and scored on a double by Levesque two batters later. After advancing to third, Levesque scored on a sac fly to left by Bear. Back-to-back singles from White and Coppola would drive in another pair of runs in the inning. Coppola crossed the plate for the final run of the inning as he scored on a double to center field by Clay Campbell (Hooksett, NH).
  • For the second consecutive inning, Hsu and Berube would reach to start things off. Hsu would score from third on a sac fly from Levesque. The scoring would be capped off when Coppola ripped a bases loaded double over the head of the center fielder.

For the day, NECC rattled off 19 hits. Levesque recored multiple hits in game one, while Coppola and Campbell had two hits apiece in game two. Coppola recorded five RBI's in game two.

NECC returns to the field on Tuesday night when they make their final regular season trip to Fraser Field to take on Fisher College, before staying on the road Thursday to open up their final Region 21 series of the season when they travel to Holyoke. The Knights will host Holyoke on Saturday afternoon to conclude Region 21 regular season action at Trinity Stadium.
