Esports off to solid start in Smash Bros. Ultimate and Overwatch

Haverhill, MA (November 21, 2019) The Northern Essex Community College esports team has been off to a strong start in the fall semester during their first season of competition. Teams have formed in League of Legends, Rocket League, Smash Bros. Ultimate and Overwatch, with competitions having been held for the latter two games.

The Knights will have four competitors competing in the inaugural NJCAA Smash Bros. Ultimate post-season tournament after a successful regular season. Chris Long (Sri), Aidan Warren (Kaldr), and Adryan Espinal (TDT) secured their post-season bids, while Muyirah Valdez (HBK) will be playing in a qualifying tiebreaker match. All the matches are being played on Thursday November 21st and The Smash Bros. Championship tournament will conclude on December 6th. Check out their current bracket standings here.

NECC also competed in their inaugural Overwatch tournament this past weekend, posting a 2-2 record on the day in the Boston Uprising Collegiate Cup that featured 12 competing schools. The team lead by Alex Montanez (Fabled) picked up convincing wins over Dean College and Johnson & Wales University before falling to both the preliminary bracket champion Champlain College, and Becker College. Northern Essex Community College competes as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) and sponsors 12 varsity intercollegiate sports including baseball, men's basketball, women's basketball, softball, women's volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's soccer, Esports and men's and women's track and field.
