Springfield, MA (November 9, 2023) – The Northern Essex Community women's basketball team got picked up a convincing win in its Region 21 opener against Springfield Tech as the Knights cruised to 104-14 victory on the road to improve to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 on conference play. The win also marked the first collegiate victory for head coach Malaquias Canery.
With full court pressure, the Knights jumped out to 29-2 lead after the first quarter and led 56-8 at the half.
Five Knights recorded double figures including three members of the starting five led by Mirelys Morales (Methuen) who tossed in 26 points, Melissa Fuentes (Lawrence) added 19, while Briannah Namale (Lowell) added 13.
Off the bench Mariah LaSalle (Lawrence) added 16 points while Emma Ruggerio (Chelmsford) tossed in 10 points of her own.
LsSalle was also relentless on the defensive side as she picked up 7 steals as part of a smothering defense.
NECC will stay on the road when they hit the court next Saturday November 18th at Quinsigamond Community College
